Before The Digital Age presenteert een verzameling tekeningen die Iebele Abel eind twintigste eeuw maakte tijdens zijn studiejaren aan de kunstacademie — een periode vlak vóór het digitale tijdperk, maar doortrokken van thema's die op de huidige digitale en technische realiteit vooruitlopen: communicatie op afstand, kijken en bekeken worden, chaos en toeval. Before The Digital Age presents a collection of drawings Iebele Abel made at the end of the twentieth century, during his student years at the art academy — a period just before the digital age, yet permeated by themes that anticipate today's digital and technological reality: communication at a distance, watching and being watched, chaos and chance. Art historian Mia Barnes places the work in the context of Abel's later oeuvre, from installations to photography, showing how early fascinations still resonate decades later. Drawing on key works, reference material and text fragments, she sketches a portrait of an artist who consistently kept searching for new forms of expression.
